Blue Light glasses appear to be advertised everywhere at the moment. They seem like quite a new phenomenon, but actually, they’re just growing in popularity. We are cottoning on as a nation more about the screens we use.
From the second that we open our eyes in the morning, we check our phone for emails, Whatsapps and just to check Instagram too. Some of us use it to check the traffic for our commute to see how congested the motorway is this morning.
For years we’ve been wary of the increase in screens. In the ‘80s and ’90s, it was TV screens. Now it's mobiles, laptops, tablets and a whole host of fancy tech we have the pleasure of owning. Growing up we’ve all been told to not look at the screen too long or our eyes will go square. But, that isn’t the reason we need to stop looking at screens. It’s actually blue light.
Screens are a part of our life, and they’re not going anywhere. Many of us can’t work without a screen. More of us relax and take a moment to chill out from our lives by plunging our faces into devices. So it is less about having a life without screens and blue light and more, “how can we live safely together?”.
That is where anti blue light glasses come in.
So, what are blue light glasses? Well, they’re glasses that block blue light. They can be prescription or non-prescription. Many are non-prescription and carry a clear lens which makes looking at screens for extended periods of time a lot more comfortable.
They stop the blue light waves from entering the eye. Therefore, helping with blurry vision, headaches and potential eye health problems.
When they first came to market, the vast majority of blue light glasses had a yellow tint. This isn’t very appealing to a lot of us. It works for some, but I know I wouldn’t wear a pair in the office. But now clear lens blue light blocking glasses are more accessible. Plus they’re a more appealing choice.
But in a broader sense, these kinds of glasses do wonders for your daily life. You’ll know that horrible, hard to describe, feeling your eyes get once you’ve been in front of a screen too long. The one you get after a day at work or playing a game where they feel tired and a little itchy. Yet, they’re stingy all at the same time. Then everything looks a little blurry too? Well, that is just your body going, we’ve had enough blue light right now, please stop.
Wearing a pair of glasses that block blue light helps stop this feeling. It makes it more comfortable to look at screens for long periods of time. And like I said above, sometimes we have to look at screens all day.
They also help with sleep! Looking at screens before bed can stop your body from falling asleep easier. For more info on this, check out our blog post on the 5 best benefits of blue light glasses.
This one really is up for discussion. When googlingare blue light glasses goodyou’ll get a mixture of science and personal recommendations. We say yes. We think they’re great. I personally wear them and find my sleep is much better and that my eyes are more comfortable.
I work in front of a screen all day. I use my phone as soon as I wake up to read football articles and check social media. I look at a laptop when I get home and watch TV. So I use a lot of screens. And I can honestly say, blue light glasses are good. They make my eyes feel less irritable and tired and I get to sleep much quicker.
Yet, there will be a science paper from some university stating the complete opposite of what I just said. There will be someone who writes for a huge media website that says how they’re just hype and not worth the money.
Everyone’s personal experience, like with anything, will be different. But for the price, just to see how you get on for a month or so, works out at about £1 a day. That’s less than your daily coffee, or the bus fare to almost anywhere. In the grand scheme of things, that’s not a lot to see if you get the same results as me. And if you don’t think they are good, then you’ve not lost a lot. Plus, they’re non-prescription, so a friend might want to try them after you and they easily can.
It varies. The usual price is roughly between £25 and £45. This is for non-prescription blue light glasses that aren’t branded. At this price range, you’re getting a quality build that will do the job.
Some companies sell them at a really high price. In some cases, this is about £60+. We’ve even seen some at over £100. You could get a designer prescription pair with a blue light filter for cheaper at Discounted Sunglasses in comparison.
We also have a great range of non-prescription designer pairs too. These include Tom Ford and Polaroid!
Short answer, yes! That is one of the benefits and reasons that people wear blue light glasses. But only headaches that are induced by digital eye strain and looking at screens for too long.
If you are getting headaches and you are getting these from being in front of screens then yes, try using some blue light glasses to see if this helps. But if these are severe or you are getting them when not at screens, please go to the doctors and see your GP. Blue light glasses are good, but we wouldn’t prescribe them over a trip to your doctors, especially with something as potentially dangerous as consistent headaches.
You can wear blue light glasses all day. If they’re comfortable and you like wearing them then you can keep wearing those glasses. If you only wish to wear them at times you’re in front of a screen, that is perfectly fine too.
Or, if you only want to wear them to help with sleep, you can wear them after sunset so you can block out the artificial blue light once all the natural blue light has gone for that day. This is a good little habit to have to help improve your sleep.
